Camp Cedars 2008

By James Muschenheim

Camp was a blast this year.  I think every body that went had a great time, I know I did.  This year their wasn’t that many spiders in tents.  I think every body at least achieved one merit badge.  For the people that didn’t go Mom is still cooking, can you believe that?  All around I don’t think anybody is disappointed with camp.

Camp Hitchcock

Black Hawk Patrol

This year’s junior leadership training or (JLT) was at Hitchcock Park and was only a one night camp, but was a BLAST!!! We went up at around 6:00 PM, got our packs into the cabins, and ate taco bell for dinner. After that we split into two groups the cobras and Chad, and the black hawks. The cobras and Chad went in to cabin two with Tarry for JLT and the black hawks worked on citizenship in the world and citizenship in the nation. We about finished both.

Later that night Tarry brought his projector and we watched Wiled Hogs on a mattress, ate pop corn and drank pop. We went to bed an around 11:00 PM and woke up at about 6:30 AM, ate hot pockets and toquitos for breakfast. We got back at LC around 8:30AM. Every one accomplished something and had fun at the same time.

Little Sioux Scout Ranch

On April 22nd the scouts went to Little Sioux for a weekend campout.  When we got there we had some confusion about where we could set up at first, but we eventually found a spot.

In the morning we had a wonderful (not!) awakening of cannons firing and planes flying low to the ground and a man running around reporting that there was a plane crash!  It was about 5:30a.m. when we got to the crash site.  There were many people on the ground apparently hurt.  Other troops were there helping people so we started to rome around and find someone that needed help.  Our first person claimed to be severely burned so we had to carry him in a blanket all the way back to where firemen and doctors were.  All the way there he was yelling “ OW! It hurts! Awww! It Burns! HELP! OWWW!.”  After we got him there we went back to the crash site and found another victim with a  broken back!  Some of the scouts took immediate action and found a big piece of wood to get him on.  He was carried down the hill to firemen who then put him in the back of a truck and took him to the hospital.  On our way back to the camp site we saw a helicopter come and pick some people up that were injured.  They were “life flighted” to a hospital.

At the camp site we ate breakfast then we all went on a hike to see a totem pole that was made by troop 249 in the 1700s!  After that people started to split up and go different place, some went fishing, some went back to the camp site, and some went hiking again.

We all met back at the camp site for lunch, then split up into partners and went to the events, some of which were: 22 shooting, archery, sling-shot, obstacle course, and many others.  When we met back at the camp site, we rested awhile and then ate supper.

After supper, we joined the other troops and followed an Order of the Arrow, ( O.A.), member to the O.A. grounds. There we listened to jokes, watched skits, and watched some 2nd year Webelos cross over again.

Back at the camp site we ate some dessert that Mr. Messersmith made us.  Yummmm!  While we were eating, Tarry got word that the scouts that got called into the O.A. had to meet at this building and they should already be there! So he quickly said who was into the O.A., “ Zach Lang, Tyler Hempel, Mikael Scheffel, and Dan Wolf.”  Tarry and the scouts that got called ran to a building only to find out it was the wrong building. So, we had to run to another building.  We were all given an envelope that had  information in it regarding our upcoming “Ordeal”.

Sunday morning we retired the flags near the mess hall and ate a sausage, biscuits, and gravy breakfast that was prepared for us by the staff.  We went back to the camp site, packed up and went home.

Scouting For Food

By Zachary Lang

5/10/2006

The food drive went very well this year.  It was set up and organized by Alison Lang.  We collected over 1500 items!  Each scout was partnered with at least one other scout and one parent.  Some scouts were literally seen running from house to house.  All the food was donated  to the local Veteran’s Affairs Office.  Mrs. Molgard, the Veteran’s Affairs representative, explained that the food would be given to veterans in need, some of which are homeless.  The parents who took kids Scouting for Food were:  Mr. Bellows, Mrs. Berding, Mrs. Hanke, Mr. Hempel, Mrs. Juel, Mr. Wayman, And Mr. Wolf.  Other parents that helped are:  Mr. Berding, Mrs. Hempel, Mrs. Lang, Mrs. Scheffel, Mrs. Wayman, and Mr. Meshenheim.  We all owe these parents a very big thanks for helping so much during the food drive.  There were a lot of scouts that showed up too, including:  Robert Berding, Dustin Bellows, Jacob Charelson, Cody Fisher, Austin Graber, Austin Hanke, Tyler Hempel, Jared Juel, Zach Lang, Kurt Lee, Hunter Massey, Kyle McGlade, James Mesehenheim, Dalton Messersmith, Matt Quass, Mikael Scheffel, James Wayman, Brain Williams, and Dan Wolf.  Mrs. Lang said we all did a great job!

After the food drive we went to Camp Hichcock.  Everyone got tent buddies then set up their tents.  After that, scouts got camp kitchens and stoves and brought them down to the camp site.  As some older scouts went off on a hike the Black Hawk patrol started working on the “Scout” rank by doing push-ups, sit-ups, standing long jumps, and a quarter mile run/jog.  Some of the Flaming Arrows and Bears helped them in doing these activities.  A while later some boys went up on a nearby hill and played catch with a baseball and some gloves. Others cooked supper then we all eat.  After that some scouts went up to play catch again and others talked or played by the camp fire.  It had been cloudy most of the afternoon.  By evening it got really dark and started to storm so we all hit the sacks.  In the tents most of us stayed up a little more and played cards or talked. Suddenly, we heard Tarry and some of the other grown-ups start to yell that we had to pack up and go!!!!  (It was about 11:30pm-12:00am when we heard Tarry start to call us.)  So we all had to hurry and pack everything  and take our tents down in the rain and lightening.  Well that was a short camp out, but still fun and exciting!
